BARTHOLOMEW, St, one of the West India Islands, 30 miles north of St Christopher's. Lat. 17.55. 35. N. Long. 62. 50. W. Though destitute of fresh water except what is supplied by rain, it is very fertile, producing sugar, cotton, and tobacco. It is of an irregular oblong shape, and has an area of 35 square miles, with a population of 18,000. Being surrounded by rocks and shoals, it is difficult of access, but its harbour, Le Carenage, on the western side, is safe and commodious. This island was ceded by France to Sweden in 1784.
