MARY, Queen of Scots, was the daughter of James V. of Scotland and Mary of Lorraine, and was born on the 8th of December 1542. She married the Dauphin of France, afterwards Francis II., on the 24th of April 1558; assumed the personal government of Scotland on the 19th of August 1561; married Lord Darnley on the 29th of July 1566, and Bothwell, on the 15th of May 1567; was forced to retire from the throne on the 17th of June 1567; was imprisoned by Elizabeth in 1568, where she remained till her execution on the 8th of February 1587.
