MASHAM, a market-town of England, North Riding of Yorkshire, on the Ure, 16 miles S.S.E. of Richmond. It has a parish church in the early English style, surmounted by a lofty spire, several Dissenting places of worship, a grammar school, mechanics' institute, a library, a literary and several benevolent societies. The inhabitants are chiefly employed in the manufacture of woollen stuffs and in the spinning of flax. Pop. (1851) 1189.
