MAINE, an old province in the W. of France, bounded on the N. by Normandy and Perche, on the E. by Orleans, on the S. by Touraine and Anjou, and on the W. by Bretagne. It is divided into Upper and Lower Maine, and formed, along with Perche, the military government of Maine. It now forms, with the addition of some parts of Higher Anjou, the department of Sarthe and Mayenne.
