MEMMINGEN, a town of Bavaria, circle of Swabia, situated on a tributary of the Iller, 43 miles S.W. of Augsburg. The town is walled, and contains a handsome town-hall, an arsenal, barracks, several churches, schools, hospitals, &c. It has manufactures of woolen, cotton, and linen fabrics, stockings, ribbons, tobacco, iron and copper wares, &c.; and there is a considerable trade in salt, wool, corn, and the various manufactures of the place. Memmingen is noted as the scene of a victory gained by the French under Moreau over the Austrians, 10th May 1800. Pop. 7200.
