METHONE (Modon), an ancient city of Messenia, was
situated on the S.W. coast. It is called Pedasus in the
Itad, and not until the Messenian wars is it mentioned in
history as Methone. At the close of the second of these
struggles it was given by the victorious Lacedæmonians to
the exiled Nauplians, but was restored to its rightful owners
by Epaminondas. An unsuccessful attack was made upon
Methone by the Athenians in 413 B.C. It was made a free
city by the Emperor Trajan.
