PENSIONARY, or PENSIONER, a person who has an appointment or yearly sum, payable during life, by way of

acknowledgment, and charged on the estate of a prince, company, or particular person. At the universities of Cambridge and Dublin the term pensioner is applied to those students who live at their own expense, and who are at Oxford called commoners. Penshurst
