THAME, or TAME, a market-town of England, in the county and 12 miles E.S.E. of Oxford, on the south bank of the Thames, which is here crossed by a bridge. It has a spacious market-place, from which the three main streets diverge. The parish church is a large and handsome cruciform building, with a fine embattled tower. Thame has also a market-house, above which is the town-hall, two free schools, alms-houses, &c. The people are mostly employed in farming; and lace is made by the women and children; but with this exception there is no manufacture here. Thame was the birth-place of the celebrated lawyer, Sir John Holt. Pop. of the parish, 3259.
