THIRSK, a market-town and parliamentary borough of England, in the North Riding of Yorkshire, 23 miles N.N.W. of York, and 213 N. by W. of London. It

stands on both sides of the Codbeck, an affluent of the Swale, which is here crossed by two stone-bridges. There are a large old Gothic church, places of worship for Wesleyans, Independents, and Quakers, several schools, and manufactures of coarse linen and saddlery. A considerable trade is carried on in corn, fruit, and provisions, markets and fairs being held here. Thirsk returns a member to the House of Commons. Pop. of the parish, 4754; of the borough, 5193.
