THURINGIAN FOREST (Germ. Thüringer-wald), a mountain-chain in central Germany, extending N.W. from the Frankenthal, for a distance of about 50 miles from the sources of the Werra and Schwarz, to the confluence of the Werra and Hessel, where it joins a branch of the Rhöngebirge in the neighbourhood of Eisenach. Its highest summits are Behrberg and Schneekopf, both above 3000 feet high. The mountains are composed for the most part of porphyry, granite, and clay-slate; and covered with forests of pines.
