TIREE, one of the Inner Hebrides, Scotland, included in the county of Argyle, 15 miles W. of the island of Mull. Its length is about 12 miles, and its breadth varies from 3 to 6. Its form is very irregular, the coast-line being indented with many bays and creeks. The surface is low and flat, on an average not more than 20 feet above the sea-level. The island is not at all wooded, but contains several considerable lakes. The soil is in general light and

sandy, but in some places it consists of a rich deep loam. About the centre of the island is a plain, 1500 acres in extent, which affords excellent pasture. Agriculture is in a backward state; and barley, oats, and potatoes are the chief crops raised. The people are mainly employed in fishing and rearing cattle. Poultry and eggs are exported. Tiryns forms a parish along with the adjacent island of Coll, and contains an Established church and a Free church. Pop. 3709.
