TAVOY, the capital of the above province, stands on the river of the same name, about 35 miles above its mouth. It is walled, and defended on three sides by a ditch, and on the fourth by the river. The streets are broad, and there is a good bazaar. The river is navigable up to the town for vessels of 120 tons; and a considerable trade is carried on between this place and the ports on the Mergui Archipelago. Pop. about 10,000.
