MEANDER, a river which rises in Phrygia, not far from Celanae, and on leaving that province forming the boundary between Caria and Lydia. It fell into the Ægean Sea between Miletus and Priene, which latter city had gradually been removed 40 stadia from the sea by the muddy deposits of the river. It was remarkable for the winding character of its stream; hence the origin of the word "to meander." (Str. xii. 577, 579; Pl. v. 31, 3.) It is joined by the Marsyas, Obrimas, Glaucus, Lycus, &c. It is now the Meinder, or Boyük Meinder.
