LAR, a town of Persia, the capital of the province of Laristan, and formerly of an Arabian kingdom, is situate in a spacious plain at the foot of a range of hills, in N. Lat. 27. 30., E. Long. 52. 45., 180 miles S.E. from Shiraz. The inhabitants are chiefly employed in the manufacture of gunpowder, arms, and cotton fabrics. Among its buildings are a dilapidated fort, a handsome bazaar, said to be the best of the kind in Persia, and the fortified mansion of the khan, or governor. Pop. about 12,000.
