LOCHGILPHEAD, a large village of Scotland, county Argyll, at the head of Loch Gilp, an arm of Loch Fine, 2 miles N. of the mouth of the Crinan Canal at Ardrihaig. It has churches belonging to the Established and other denominations, and a district gaol. The inhabitants are chiefly employed in the herring-fishery; and daily communication is maintained with Glasgow by steamers. Pop. (1851) 1703.
