LOXA, or Loja, a town of South America, in the republic of Ecuador, and department of Assay, capital of the province of the same name, is situated in a valley of the Andes Mountains, 6768 feet above the level of the sea, in S. Lat. 4, and W. Long. 79. 24. It has an extensive trade in cinchona bark, obtained in the mountain forests to the E. of the town, and is considered to be of the finest quality. Pop. 10,000.
