LYNCHBURG, a town of the United States of North America, Campbell county, Virginia, on the right side of the James River, 110 miles W. by S. of Richmond, N. Lat. 37. 36., W. Long. 79. 22. It stands on a gently rising ground, surrounded by magnificent scenery, and is well located for commercial purposes. By the great James River and Kanawha Canal it has communication with Richmond and the sea coast, and with the Ohio River in the westward; while by rail it is connected with all the principal places in the States. The chief trade is in tobacco and grain; 140,000 cwt. of the former being inspected here annually. Water-power is plentifully supplied from the James River; and manufactures of tobacco, brass, ironware, and cotton stuffs, are largely carried on. Lynchburg was founded in 1786, and incorporated 1805. Pop. (1848) 7678, (1853) about 10,000.
