in botany, a genus of the polyandria polygynia clas. The English names are, adonis-flower, pheasant's eye, red maithes, or red morocco. The calyx of this genus is pentaphyllous, the petals are five, and the seeds are naked. There are five species of the adonis, viz. the festivus, autumnalis, vernalis, appennina, and capensis; none of which are natives of Britain, excepting the autumnalis. ADONIS potio, in antiquity, an ancient beverage made of wine, mixed with flower of roasted adon. It was the same with cyceon.
