Volume 1 · 110 words · 1771 Edition

or ALBE, in the Romish church, a vestment of white linen hanging down to their feet, and answering to the surplice of our clergy. In the ancient church, it was usual, with those newly baptized, to wear an alb, or white vestment; and hence the Sunday after Easter was called dominica in albis, on account of the albs worn by those baptised on Easter-day.

ALB is also the name of a Turkish coin, otherwise called asper. See Asper.

ALBA firma, or ALBUM, in our old customs, denoted rent paid in silver, and not in corn, which was called black-mail.

ALBA terra, one of the numerous names for the philosopher's stone.
