a celebrated mountain, situated in the province of Macedonia, on a peninsula, which stretches into the Aegean sea, near the gulf of Consta, being an entire chain of mountains extended near seven miles in length, and three in breadth. It is now called Monte Santo, from the 22 monasteries, besides cells and caves, upon it, containing near 6000 monks and hermits; no woman is allowed to come within sight of their convents. It is situated 70 miles east of Salonichi, or Theffalonia, and pays considerable tribute to the Turks, it being under the protection of the bofianig bafcha; on this chain formerly stood five cities.
