in antiquity, a monument erected in honour of the dead, but not containing any of their remains. Of these there were two sorts; one erected for such persons as had been honoured with funeral rites in another place; and the second sort, for those that had never obtained a just funeral.

The sign whereby honorary sepulchres were distinguished from others, was commonly the wreck of a ship, to denote the decease of the person in some foreign country.
