Check-roll, a roll or book, wherein is contained the names of such persons as are attendants and in pay to the king, or other great personages, as their household servants.

Clerk of the Check, in the king's household, has the check and controulment of the yeomen of the guard, and all the others belonging to the royal family, allowing their absence or defects in attendance, or diminishing their wages for the same, &c. He also, by himself or deputy, takes the view of those that are to watch in the court, and has the setting of the watch, &c.

Clerk of the Check, in the king's navy at Plymouth, is also the name of an officer invested with the like power.
