in antiquity, a public register, in which were written the names of the consuls and other magistrates among the heathens; and among the Christians, they were a sort of tablets, on one of which were written the names of the deceased, and on the other those of the living patriarchs, bishops, &c. or those who had done any service to the church, for whom prayers were offered, the deacon reading the names at mass.
