a town of the United Provinces, in the province of Holland, situated two miles east of the sea, and fourteen north-west of Rotterdam. This is one of the finest towns in Europe; but though it enjoys all the privileges of a city of Holland, except that of sending representatives to the state, yet, as it has no walls, it is only esteemed a village. Here every city of the United provinces has a house for their respective deputies, and here the states of the province of Holland assemble, and all public affairs are transacted.
