HAMBURGH

a large city and well fortified port town of Germany, in the circle of Lower Saxony, and duchy of Holstein, situated on the north side of the river Elb, partly on islands, and partly on the continent. It is an imperial city, or sovereign state, governed by its own magistrates, and subject only to the general laws of the empire. Merchants from all parts of Europe resort to it, from whence their goods are sent into the heart of the empire: E. long. 9° 40', N. lat. 54°.
