the capital city of Judea, or Palestine, in Asiatic Turkey, situated thirty miles east of the Levant, or Mediterranean sea, and ninety miles south of Damascus: E. long. 36°, N. lat. 32°.

It stands on a high rock, with steep ascents on every side, except on the north; and is surrounded with a deep valley, which is again encompassed with hills. The city is at present three miles in circumference, and has a little altered its situation: for mount Calvary, which was formerly without the walls, stands now in the middle of the city; and mount Zion, which stood near the centre, is now without the walls.
