JUST

Volume 2 · 73 words · 1771 Edition

a sportive combat on horseback, man against man, armed with lances.

The difference between justs and tournaments, according to Du Cange, consists in this, that the latter is a genus of which the former is only a species. Tournaments included all kinds of military sports and engagements, which were made out of gallantry and diversion. Justs were those particular combats, where the parties were near each other, and engaged with lance and sword.
