the capital of Portugal, situated on the north bank of the Tagus, about ten miles from its mouth, and eighty miles west of the frontiers of Spain: W. long. 9° 25', N. lat. 38° 25'. It is about six miles long, winding with the river, from whence it rises with an easy ascent, and is computed to contain about 30,000 houses, 200,000 inhabitants, forty parish-churches, and forty convents of both sexes.
