or rather Straights of Magellan. These straights are about three hundred miles in length from the Atlantic to the Pacific ocean, but of a very unequal breadth; and were at first discovered and passed by Ferdinand Magellan, from whom they had their name: they are situated between the island Terra del Fuego and the most southern part of the continent of America, between 76° and 84° of W. long. and between 52° and 54° of south lat.
