MITRE

Volume 3 · 78 words · 1771 Edition

a sacerdotal ornament worn on the head by bishops and certain abbots on solemn occasions; being a fort. sort of cap, pointed, and cleft at top. The high priest among the Jews wore a mitre or bonnet on his head. The inferior priests among the Jews had likewise their mitres, but in what respect they differed from that of the high-priest is uncertain. Some contend that the ancient bishops wore mitres, but this is by no means certain.
