Volume 3 · 112 words · 1771 Edition

a sect of Protestants, who have been settled for a considerable time past at Herrnhuth in Germany, and have of late years spread themselves over most of our American colonies, as well as in several parts of England, where they are permitted to settle by a late act of parliament. They have a kind of church-government peculiar to themselves, and are commonly known by the name of Unitas Fratrum, or The Brethren. They profess the utmost veneration for our blest Saviour, whom they consider as their immediate Head and Director; enjoin the most implicit obedience to the rulers of their church; and are said to practise much brotherly love amongst one another.
