in geography, the westward quarter of the horizon, or that part of the horizon where the ecliptic, or the sun therein, descends into the lower hemisphere, in contradiction to orient. Hence we use the word occidental, for any thing belonging to the west; as, occidental bezoar, occidental pearl, &c.
