in ornithology, a genus belonging to the order of grallae. The beak is subulated, bent back, sharp and flexible at the point; the feet are webbed, and furnished with three toes. There is but one species, viz., the avocetta, a native of the southern parts of Europe. It migrates into Italy, but seldom to the north.
