in botany, a genus of the cryptogamia mucil clas. The calyx of the male flower is a smooth conic calyptra; the antherae are cylindric; and the receptacle coloured, membranaceous, and very large. There are four species, only one of them, viz. the ampullaceum, or common splachnum, a native of Britain.
