a term used by some imaginary writers, for a demon who assumes the shape of a woman, and as such lies with a man; in which sense, it stands opposed to incubus, which was a demon in form of a man, that they supposed to lie with a woman.

But the truth is, the succubus is only a species of the incubus, or night-mare. See Medicine, p. 157.
