Volume 3 · 84 words · 1771 Edition

or Turpeth-root, in the materia medica, the cortical part of the root of an Indian convolvulus, brought to us in oblong pieces, of a brown or ash-colour on the outside, and whitish within: the herb is ponderous, not wrinkled, easy to break, and discovering a large quantity of resinous matter to the eye: its taste is at first sweetish; when chewed for a little time, it becomes acid, pungent, and nauseous. This root is a cathartic, not of the safest, or most certain kind.
