in ecclesiastical history, a branch of the Thomists, so called from Alvaro their leader, who asserted the doctrine of sufficient grace, instead of the efficacious grace of the ancient Thomists. The Alvarists came near to the Jesuits, the ancient Thomists to the Jansenists.
