a famous Scythian philosopher, conversed with Solon, and lived an austere life. Upon his return from his travels through Greece, he attempted to change the ancient customs of Scythia, and to establish those of Greece; which proved fatal to him. The king shot him dead in a wood with an arrow. A great many statues were erected to him after his death. He is said to have invented tinder, the anchor, and the potter's wheel; but the latter is mentioned by Homer, who lived long before him. Anacharsis flourished in the time of Croesus. Diogenes Laertius made an epigram upon his attempt to introduce the Grecian manners into his country, and his fate on that account.
