in ancient geography, the name of a nation whose country, according to Herodotus, was adjacent to Scythia. Their name, compounded of two Greek words, signifies man-eaters. Herodotus does not inform us whether their manner of subsisting corresponded with their name; whether they were savage as to eat human flesh*. They are represented, however, as the most barbarous and fierce of all nations. They were not governed by laws; the care of their cattle was their chief employment. Their dress was like that of the Scythians; and they had a language peculiar to themselves.
