a term in poetry, applied to a sort of verse, of which Archilocheus was the inventor, consisting of seven feet, the four first whereof are ordinarily dactyls, though sometimes iambics, the three last trochees; as in Horace,

Salvator est hymnus, gratia vice veris & Pausan.
