anciently Bergi, a city of Norway, and capital of the province of Bergenhus. It is the see of a bishop, and has a strong castle and a good port. It is a large place; but subject to fires, as being all built of wood. It is surrounded with mountains almost inaccessible; and little or no corn grows in all the country: that which they use is all imported, and distributed from thence throughout the kingdom. The principal trade is in stock-fish, furs, and deal-boards. E. Long. 5. 45. N. Lat. 60. 11.
