BEROOT

Volume 2 · 187 words · 1778 Edition

a town of Phoenicia, a province of Syria in Turkey in Asia. It is the ancient Berytus; but there are now no remains of its former beauty, except its situation, which is very agreeable, and in a fertile soil. It is just far enough from the sea to prevent the inconveniences of an inundation. There are very fine streams of water which flow from the mountains, and are dispersed into beautiful fountains through several parts of the town. The great Christian church is turned into a mosque, and there is a poor old one for the use of the Greeks. It is adorned with several old pictures, particularly that of St Nicephorus, with a beard down to his feet. The wall on the south side of the town is yet entire, and seems to have been built out of the ruins of the old city. At a little distance from the city there are pillars of granite, and the ruins of floors of Mosaic work. On the sea-shore is an old ruined castle, and the remains of a mole. E. Long. 35° 38'. N.
