It is made of a red stone, like our marble: the head resembles our tobacco-pipes, but larger; and is fixed on a hollow reed, to hold it for smoking: they adorn it with fine wings of several colours, and is the calumet of the sun, to whom they present it, especially if they want fair weather, or rain. This pipe is a pass and safe conduct amongst all the allies of the nation who has given it: in all embassies the ambassador carries it as an emblem of peace, and it always meets with a profound regard; for the savages
