Volume 3 · 64 words · 1778 Edition

a powder of a very beautiful red colour, bordering upon purple; and used by painters-in-miniature, though rarely on account of its great price. The manner of preparing it is kept a secret by the colour-makers; neither do any of those receipts which have for a long time been published concerning the preparation of this and other colours at all answer the purpose. See Colour-Making.
