or CARTOON, in painting, a design drawn on strong paper, to be afterwards called through, and transferred on the fresh plaster of a wall to be painted in fresco.

Carton is also used for a design coloured, for working in mosaic, tapestry, &c. The cartons formerly at Hampton-court, but now at the queen's palace, are designs of Raphael Urbin, intended for tapestry.
