(Edmund) D.D., a learned English divine of the 17th century, distinguished by his skill in the eastern languages. He was educated at Cambridge; where he was master of Catherine hall, and Arabic professor; and was at length canon of Canterbury. He had the greatest share in the Polyglott bible of London; and wrote the Heptaglotton pro septem Orientalibus, &c. On this excellent work, which occupied a great part of his life, he bestowed incredible pains and expense, even to the breaking of his constitution, and exhausting of his fortune, having expended no less than 12,000l. upon that work.
