Volume 3 · 90 words · 1778 Edition

a town of the East Indies, on the coast of Malabar, in the province of Bihagana, and kingdom of Vifapour. Its river affords a good harbour for small vessels. The town is fortified, and so is the island on the south side of the harbour. It had formerly a good trade, but is now miserably poor. It was taken by the Portuguese in 1507, to whom it still belongs. It is fifteen miles south of Bombay, and five miles from the sea. E. Long. 72. 45. N. Lat. 18. 30.
