DAEMON

Volume 4 · 61 words · 1778 Edition

a name given by the ancients to certain spirits, or genii, which appeared to men, either to do them service, or to hurt them. The Platonsists distinguish between gods, demons, and heroes. The gods are those whom Cicero calls Dei majorum gentium. The demons are those whom we call angels. Christians, by the word daemon, understand only evil spirits, or devils.
