a sea-port town of Devonshire, seated on the river Dart, near its fall into the sea. It is a well frequented and populous place, having commodious harbours, and considerable trade by sea. The town is large and well built; but the streets are narrow and bad, though all paved. It has the title of an earldom, and sends two members to parliament. W. Long. 4. o. N. Lat. 50. 25.
