Dodoneus, in antiquity, an epithet given to Jupiter, because he was worshipped in a temple built in the forest of Dodona, where was the most famous and (it is said) the most ancient oracle of all Greece. It is reported that the pigeons and the very oaks of the forest of Dodona spoke and delivered oracles. In the temple was a fountain, which the ancient naturalists assure us had a property of rekindling torches when newly extinguished.
